What is a Spiritual Awakening?
There is no one right answer to what a spiritual awakening is. We are, after all, individuals.
In simple terms, however, a spiritual awakening is the recognition of yourself being connected to the Greater Consciousness. It’s knowing that you are something more than your physical body and the thoughts that swirl in your head.
It is the awareness that separation from Oneness is an illusion created by the ego.
What are the Signs of a Spiritual Awakening?
Spiritual awakenings bring significant change – new perspectives, enlightened views, open-mindedness. As we grow on our spiritual journey, we experience letting go of prior attachments, strengthened intuition and more frequent synchronicities.
Those things all feel good and frankly are what we’re looking for! But the journey can also come with unexpected and oftentimes painful changes too.
A common one? Relationship changes. Relationships of all kinds can and probably will change in some way – friends, family, spouses, partners, employment.
How Do Spiritual Awakenings Affect Relationships?
Your relationship with You has Changed
The way you see yourself and the way you interact with the world around you is different. You may be more sensitive, put up more boundaries, be more patient with some behavior and less patient with others. Regardless, you will change – again, that’s the whole purpose, right? And when you change, the way you relate to others naturally does as well.
Vibration
The Universal Law of attraction brings that which matches our vibration to us. Before your spiritual awakening, your energy was vibrating in perfect alignment with the people and circumstances around you. Presumably as you progress on your path, your vibration rises and as a result, you may begin to feel unmatched to or out of alignment with current relationships. Bottom line, you begin to lose interest.
Changing desires
With spiritual growth comes a more expanded way of being. Basic lifestyle patterns and interests can change. What you desire to read, watch, listen to and participate in can shift dramatically. Suddenly you may not have as much in common with the people in your life anymore.
Goal shift
Maybe the 6-figure career and moving to the city just isn’t that important to you anymore. But it still could be to your partner. The goals you had in the relationship in the beginning — the vision board of your relationship desires — may now not reflect the same things.
Ego (yes, again?!?)
A spiritual awakening, finding our purpose, feeling connected to the greater consciousness, can cause feelings of superiority if we compare ourselves to others. If we don’t remain vigilant in our awareness, we can fall prey to a feeling of being special or “chosen”. Similarly that can bring about feelings of inferiority in those around you which of course then creates division and resentment in the relationship.
What Do I Do When My Spiritual Growth Affects My Relationship?
Self-awareness. Pay attention to your words and actions when you are in communication with loved ones. Are you coming from a place of love and kindness? Are you operating spiritually and truly being the change you’re working so hard for?
Trust. On this journey, trust and surrender is critical. If we try to control outcomes, we won’t be in alignment with what may be best for us. So be open to what comes next. Trust that everything is always working out in your highest and greatest good.
Be authentic. Operate honestly! Be willing to share your feelings and experiences as you move down your path. Give those around you the opportunity to understand and participate in your awakening.
Compassion – for self & others! Try to look at things from your partner or your friend’s perspective. Be gentle to self and non-judgmental to others. We’re all just doing our best. No two paths will ever be identical but they are all perfect.
Every spiritual journey, every awakening and every relationship is unique. Take your time navigating through these moments. It can be tough. As a spiritual coach and mentor, I’m here to support you along the way.
