Discovering the gift of being a medium is such a wonderful, magical thing. It’s full of ups and downs, clarity and confusion, wonder and frustration.
In my own journey into mediumship, I’ve read tons of books, participated in dozens workshops and classes for mediums and listened to countless spiritual speakers, tutors and educators.
But through all of that, I have to say; there are just some things they don’t tell you about being a medium!
Untold Truth #1
Not everybody thinks it’s cool that you talk to dead people. As a matter of fact, some people think, well, let me be honest……that you’re bat sh*t crazy. But that’s ok! You’ll learn that you’re not. To accept yourself. You’ll learn to trust what’s happening and all that comes with this new, wonderful, deeply fulfilling Truth about yourself.
Untold Truth #2
Spiritual gifts can be emotionally draining. Some readings are just plain hard. Hard because of the emotions. To maintain the connection. Hard because its 9pm after a long day of a regular, muggle job followed by soccer practice, dinner and homework. Hard, but worth every worn-down, fatigued, drowsy moment of it all.
Untold Truth #3
Your job isn’t over at the 30 or 50-minute point. Yes, the appointment is for that long. And, sure, after that, there’s no more client in your office, or on the phone or video teleconference. But your connection to them isn’t complete. You care. You wonder and ponder and consider – Did it help them? Change them? Relieve their grief? Could you have said more, provided more evidence? Did you serve spirit in the way they needed? It’s a service and the service continues long after the client leaves.
Untold Truth #4
Some people are simply not ready to believe. They’ll book an appointment. They’ll say they’re open to it. But, when it comes right down to it, they just aren’t ready. It’s too hard to comprehend. Too contradictive to the ideologies that were drilled into them as children. Too foreign from what they’ve been taught and practiced for so many years. But don’t shrug it off or dismiss the experience as a failure or a waste of time of yours – or theirs! Their soul guided them to you for a reason. Consider it a seed.
Untold Truth #5
There will be messages you just can’t deliver. Because of circumstances, client receptivity, or simply the environment, sometimes you just can’t deliver the message. And that’s hard. You want so desperately to be of service to the spirit that’s coming forth, to help to spread the Truth as you know it, to relieve the pain of the humans around you and even to have what you’re experiencing validated. But the fact of the matter is, sometimes, it’s just not the right time. Remember, everything in Divine timing. When it’s right for spirit and the client and you, it will all come together in a glorious, resounding cacophony of understanding and peace.
Untold Truth #6
There will be messages you just don’t understand. Try as you might to decipher the images, thoughts or words that Spirit is presenting, you just can’t make sense of it and neither can the client. It can become frustrating and disheartening. And often, it can cause you to question your abilities. In those cases, ask Spirit to present it to you differently. Ask them to use your own experiences as a template for your understanding. Ask them to show you in a different way – ghostly charades if that’s what it takes! And then, if you still don’t get it, just let it go. Trust that there’s a reason why the message isn’t clear. Perhaps it’s not right for the client at this time. Perhaps it’s not right for you. Don’t try to make sense of it anymore. Just move forward. Don’t ever stop moving forward.
Untold Truth #7
There’s no going back. People talk about “turning off” their gifts. But the truth is, once you’ve delivered messages for spirit, once you’ve seen the tears of a wife reunited with her husband or felt the relief of a child experience the lost love of a parent; it becomes part of you. Ingrained in you. It forever changes you. Don’t go into this thinking, ‘If this doesn’t work for me, it’s ok. I’ll just go back to being my ‘regular’ self.’ You won’t. It’s impossible. Embrace it. Trust it. Love it. Because it’s now a part of you.
Untold Truth #8
Connecting outside of you starts with connecting inside of you. There is this beautiful, wonderful understanding about mediumship that it brings so much healing to the clients. But what don’t we talk about? The healing it brings to the medium. The connection doesn’t start with Spirit. It’s starts with the connection to Self. Embracing your inner knowing, trusting your intuition, meeting the True you, maybe for the first time. And it’s about allowing the messages, the connection, and the journey to bring you closer to the God of your understanding, closer to yourself. It’s about healing the healer.
